Three Oshawa organizations receive
new funding for
accessibility projects through Enabling
Accessibility Fund
OSHAWA, April 12, 2012 – Today,
funding was announced for three projects in
Oshawa under the federal Enabling
Accessibility Program. Dr. Colin Carrie,
Member of Parliament for Oshawa and
Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of
Health, spoke out on this announcement.
“It is vitally important that people with
disabilities are given the opportunity to
use their talent and skills like everyone
else,” said Colin Carrie. “This funding will
have a great impact on people in Oshawa who
have disabilities, and will allow them to
take part in many activities that many of us
take for granted.”
The
Enabling Accessibility Fund, a Federal
initiative, improves accessibility, removes
barriers, and enables Canadians with
disabilities to participate in and
contribute to their communities. Three
projects in Oshawa were granted funding:
■
Durham Region Canadian Mental Health
Association received $15,565 to
construct an exterior ramp, install
automated door openers, raise the sinks and
counters, and install grab bars in the
accessibility washrooms;
■
Corporation of the City of Oshawa
received $31,256. The funding for this
program consists of acquiring accessible
communication technological devices such as
13 UiDuo machines, 13 Optelec Compact Video
Magnifiers, and three JAWS and ZoomTExt
software packages; and
■
Woodview Park received $42,212 to
install accessible playground equipment.
“I am pleased that these projects were
approved,” stated Colin Carrie. “This
funding will help make Oshawa more
accessible to those with disabilities.”
