OSHAWA, 9 July 2007
– Dr. Colin Carrie, Member of Parliament for Oshawa, today
announced $25,000 in new funding for the Durham Region’s
l’Assemblée des Communautés Francophones de l’Ontario (ACFO),
Durham-Peterborough.
Funding for ACFO was
provided through the Department of Official Languages in
order to assist in the improvement of French services for
priority sectors in the Durham and Peterborough regions.
The purpose of the funding is support the ACFO promotion and
enhancement of official language community programs in the
regions.
“The commitment of our
government for official languages is unwavering. Today’s
funding is an example of our commitment for maintaining
official language programs in minority official language
communities, like Oshawa and the Durham region,” said Dr.
Carrie. “Oshawa should foster further development of the
French language, not only because it is an official
language, but because it represents an important aspect of
our collective history.”
The ACFO will utilize the
new funding to help claim the rights of francophones through
concrete actions in the health and social services network,
and the availability of adequate services. Efforts will be
dedicated to the identification and inclusion of
ethno-cultural minorities and recognize Oshawa as a
designated bilingual city.
