OSHAWA, 10 July 2008
– Colin
Carrie, Member of Parliament for Oshawa and Parliamentary Secretary to
the Minister of Industry, today issued the following statement:
“I am
pleased that on July 7, 2008 the new Wage Earner Protection Program
(WEPP) came into effect. I have worked diligently with my colleagues to
amend the WEPP and finally, with the official launch of this program,
the rights of Canadian workers will be better protected.
This
program reassures hard working Oshawa residents that they will receive
their last pay cheque in the unfortunate event that their employer files
for bankruptcy.
This
new program is fair, consistent, and focused on real results to protect
workers’ wages when employers are faced with difficult business
decisions.”
A backgrounder
which discusses the Wage Earner Protection Program is available
via the
Human Resources and Social Development Canada website.
About the new WEPP
The federal government has
announced a new Wage Earner Protection Program (WEPP), which came into
force on 7 July 2008. Under the program, eligible employees whose
employer declares bankruptcy or is subject to a receivership can apply
to receive unpaid wages and vacation pay, up to a maximum of
approximately $3000. The Program does not provide for payment of unpaid
