OSHAWA - May 20, 2010 -
Colin Carrie,
Member of Parliament for Oshawa and Parliamentary Secretary to
the Minister of Health, today announced that the City of Oshawa
will receive an investment of $1.1 million dollars for upgrades
to the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, through the Federal Economic
Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).
“The Robert
McLaughlin Gallery is one of Oshawa’s local gems,” said MP
Carrie. “This beautiful gallery allows local, Canadian and
international artists to showcase their unique talent in a
tranquil yet modern environment. I am extremely proud of the
cultural assets in our community and wholeheartedly support our
investments in them. Our government is committed to continuing
to show support to the arts and cultural communities”.
“The federal
government understands the importance of investing in
communities like Oshawa,” stated Oshawa Mayor John Gray. “The
Robert McLaughlin Gallery, the region’s largest public art
gallery, is the latest benefactor of funding from the Federal
Community Adjustment Fund. Today’s funding announcement, of over
$1 million dollars, allows the Gallery to continue its
dedication to the collection, preservation and exhibition of the
best in Canada’s art heritage.”
“Our partnership
with the City of Oshawa has granted us the opportunity to
improve the facility, ensuring the preservation of cultural
heritage for generations to come,” said Gabrielle Peacock, Chief
Executive Officer of the Robert McLaughlin Gallery.
“Enhancements to the building will include upgrades to the
climate control system, replacement of the roof system and the
replacement of a fire suppressant system. We take this as an
important sign that the federal government fully realizes the
difference Canadian museums are making in their communities and
the value collections have toward understanding our cultural
diversity,” she continued. “The Robert McLaughlin Gallery is
committed to the belief that art is an essential part of the
human experience. We are dedicated to making this belief
tangible with the communities it serves. We are truly delighted
to receive this important funding.”
This project will
be funded through the
Community Adjustment Fund, a two-year, $1-billion national
program aimed at addressing the short-term economic needs of
communities hit hardest by the global economic recession. The
approved project must meet the terms and conditions set out in
the contribution agreement.
