Statement on Bill C-71

Dr. Colin Carrie, Member of Parliament for Oshawa, released the following statement on Bill C-71 – An Act to amend certain Acts and Regulations in relation to firearms.

“As a father of three children I have always believed that the safety of Canadians should be the number one priority of any government.”

“The unfortunate reality is that Justin Trudeau has once again failed Canadians with this legislation.  It does nothing to address violence in the GTA and rural communities, and essentially re-introduces a wasteful and ineffective firearms registry.”

“This legislation is typical of Liberal Governments throughout history when it comes to firearms.  They criminalize law-aiding hunters and sports shooters while their legislation does nothing to limit criminal access to firearms.”

“After careful review of this legislation, and a dialogue with constituents and impacted stakeholders, I have determined that I cannot support Bill C-71.”

“I will join my Conservative colleagues in continuing to fight for concrete actions to keep Canadians safe and focus our efforts on the criminal element behind firearms violence.  We will never support legislation that targets law-abiding firearms owners and treats them like criminals.”
